The DevGroup NW is co-hosting a special “Holiday Edition” of the exciting and fun Presentation Karaoke at the Someday Lounge (125 NW Fifth Ave., Portland) from 6:00 - 8:30pm on Thursday, Dec. 17th. Give a presentation that you’ve never seen to an audience of hecklers. It’s not unlike that recurring nightmare of taking a test in high school for which you hadn’t studied. Wearing only your underwear is optional. Judges for Presentation Karaoke include tech celebrities Amber Case, Jason Glaspey and Bram Pitoyo.
Winners of the karaoke will be invited to appear live on the 30 Hour Day (http://www.30hourday.org) telethon.

Twiter Office

See inside the new Twitter office (aka the TwOffice) in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood. This is Twitter’s 3rd office and it’s pretty large, so there’s plenty of room for growth. The office was designed by Sara Morishige Williams, who is married to Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Sara has a write-up on her approach to the design, which was to “bring the outdoors in and to make the space playful yet useful and sustainable”. Founds via Laughingsquid

What many people may not realize is that Norman Rockwell meticulously staged photos as reference material for his illustrations. NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday recently did a story featuring some of the photographers and models that Norman Rockwell used for the photos along with a gallery featuring side-by-side comparisons. A book featuring these photos “Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera” by Ron Schick, was recently published. A companion exhibition is currently on display at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA and will be up through May 31st, 2010. via Laughingsquid

This one’s for Travis - The New York Post did a story on a couple live in the smallest studio apartment in New York City, a 175 square foot pre-war converted maid’s quarters located in Morningside Heights. They purchased it for $150K and live there in harmony with their two cats.

zahipedia_1_apple-tablet-pc

Yair Reiner, an analyst for Oppenheimer, has lit some incense, drained his tea-cup and stared deep into the pattern of the remaining leaves. The fates have thus communicated to him the following “fact”: Apple will ship a 10.1-inch touch-screen tablet in spring 2010.

The average reader of the average gadget-blog knows more about the real workings of the tech world than even the best of analysts (or “prophets” as I prefer to call them). But we shall humor Uncle Yair, and present here his rock-solid inferences, based on the study not of actual tea-leaves, but of his supply-chain contacts.

The Jesus-tablet will use an LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) LCD like that of the iPhone instead of a pricier OLED display, and if Apple wants to have enough in stock to meet demand (at a projected manufacturing speed of a million units per month) then a launch date in March or April is likely.

The price? The same as a MacBook with a full keyboard, or $1,000. This would be the perfect price for Apple to charge if it didn’t want to sell any.

Reiner goes on to speculate that book publishers, “disgruntled by Amazon’s terms” which give the publisher just 70% of revenue on an exclusive deal, prefer the numbers offered by Apple. And what is this sweet, sweet deal from Apple? An “App Store-type 30/70 split.” Can you spot the difference? Me either.

By now, we’re pretty sure that we’ll see an Apple tablet soon, probably in the first half of the year (spring for tablets, summer for iPhones, autumn for iPods, and Macs when they are ready). We’re also sure that until it is actually announced by Apple, every week will bring further groping guesses about this tech-unicorn, in increasingly desperate attempts to drum up publicity. via Wired

disposable-flask

Given the outrageous drink pricing at most major sporting and music events, no one is going to blame you for sneaking in your own hooch — but when security rears its ugly head, it’s way better to not have an expensive carrying device in your pocket. Enter the Disposable Flask ($15/set of 3). These 7.5 oz. reusable foil pouches are portable, freezable, pocketable, and easily disposable, and feature airtight plastic lids that won’t leave tell-tale leakage marks on your clothes.
